The Dachverband Lehm e.V. is the German Association for Building with Earth. Every four years the DVL organises an international conference and trade fair on building with earth in a different earth building region in Germany together with an excursion in the region. After the conferences in 1994, 1997, 2000 and 2004, the LEHM 2008 is the 5th such event organised by the Dachverband Lehm e.V. Each of these events has attracted several thousand visitors. In addition to organising a high-profile conference programme, a central aspect is the presentation of new innovations in earth building products and technologies through a trade fair that takes place parallel to the conference.

We are pleased to announce that the LEHM 2008, the 5th international conference and trade fair on building with earth, organised in cooperation with the Landesmuseum Koblenz and the Koblenz Chamber of Crafts will take place at Ehrenbreitstein Fortress in Koblenz from the 10-12 October 2008. This historic location stands high above the junction of the Rhine and Mosel rivers and is part of the Central Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage site. As with previous events, the LEHM 2008 consists of two parts:

• Trade Fair – 9-11 October 2008
• Conference – 10-11 October 2008
  with an excursion on the 12 October 2008

Call for papers

The Dachverband Lehm e.V. extends an open invitation to all interested professional colleagues to submit thematic relevant contributions and papers for the LEHM 2008 conference as well as for a poster session which will be exhibited parallel to the conference. The theme of the conference programme will include the following subject areas:

1. Earth building norms and regulations
2. Education and training in earth building
3. Current research into building with earth
4. Information networks in earth building
5. Current problems in earthen building practice
6. New projects and exemplary conversions forum

Candidates wishing to present a paper or poster at the conference should submit a short overview (abstract) of not more than 500 words with title and name of the author. Submissions can be in German or English. On a separate sheet please provide us with your name and full contact details (address, company / organisation, tel/fax, email etc.) as well as a short description of your involvement in building with earth.

Contributions for a 20 minute oral presentation at the conference and for the poster session will be selected on the basis of the abstracts submitted. All contributions will be published in the conference proceedings. Contributors will therefore be requested to provide us with the full text of their presentation in advance, including figures, tables and illustrations. Please note that contributing authors will need to register for the conference. In preparation for the conference and the proceedings, contributors are requested to observe the deadlines given. We regret that contributions received beyond these dates may not be able to be included in the conference proceedings.

All speakers and authors of poster sessions will receive free entry to the conference and a free ticket for the reception. Travel and hotel costs cannot be covered by the DVL. A limited amount of financial assistance is available for speakers from developing countries. Please contact us for further details.

Submission guidelines

Please submit contributions and abstracts:

• via e-mail as Word-document, or
• as Windows-formatted disk or CD-ROM.

All images should be in JPG or TIFF format at a resolution of 300 dpi. Further submission guidelines will be provided with the notification of acceptance of papers and posters.

The full conference tickets and day tickets include the conference proceedings, tea and coffee breaks and lunch buffet as well as free entry to the trade fair.

Members of the Dachverband Lehm e.V. are entitled to a 20% discount off all conference tickets.

As part of the LEHM 2008 the Dachverband Lehm e.V. will also be organising a reception with banquet on the 10th October 2008, 7 p.m. at the Villa Musica, Schloss Engers. Tickets: 25 Euro.
