Teaching
Two new modules which will provide theoretical and practical knowledge of materials for low impact buildings are being launched in 2011-12 and will be led by Lucy Cartlidge.
ARC6821 Materials for Low Impact Buildings – Theory (15 credits)
This module engages through lectures and seminars with a range of materials for low impact buildings which may include load-bearing and frame construction using straw bales, rammed earth, adobe, cob, compressed earth blocks, hemp-lime blocks, earth renders and plasters, timber techniques. The aim is to give students in depth theoretical knowledge about the environmental performance, practical applications and historical use of materials for low impact buildings through lectures and seminars.
ARC6822 Materials for Low Impact Buildings – Practical (15 credits)
This module will be hosted at the Derbyshire Eco Centre. Students will participate in practical workshops and tutorials with a range of materials for low impact buildings which may include load-bearing and frame construction using straw bales, rammed earth, adobe, cob, compressed earth blocks, hemp-lime blocks, earth renders and plasters, timber techniques. The aim is to give students a hands-on experience of working with materials as well as in depth knowledge about the technical specification and construction details associated with materials for low impact buildings.
